We just love Spring and all the new blooms it brings. Happy Spring from us to you!
Sub adulthood begins at i9, or at their ninth molt. Since Phidippus Regius can mature in 10 or more molts, a sub adult will remain a sub adult until they mature. Because jumping spiders go longer between molts as they get older, a sub adult can be anywhere from 9 to 13 months old. Females and males alike will usually be set in their ways and tend to have very curious personalities .
A healthy diet for a sub adult jumping spider can consist of mealworms, medium sized crickets, roaches, flies and spikes. They should drink water daily, and may even enjoy sugar. water droplets from a flat surface. Both male and female abdomens should remain plump, not stuffed or too thin. This is a good gage on how often to feed them, it could be every 3 to 5 days.
Sub adults should have a full sized enclosure, 4x4x8 or even a bit larger. It's important to have adequate ventilation and plenty of enrichment for your jumping spider. They will likely molt into adulthood in thus enclosure so it's important not to disturb them while in premolt. Also, as your jumper grows, they lay down drag lines that make their space "home" and help them get around. Try not to remove these, as they're very important in the next phase of your jumper's life.
Our jumping spiders require a night/day cycle. You can provide this with natural indirect sunlight and LED lamps. They do not require a heat lamp. They are pretty comfy at room temperature, 72-80 degrees. If your home gets cooler you can provide heat by using a heat mat with a thermostat. Place it about a half inch away from one side of the enclosure. It's also important to note if you live in a dry climate, using substrate in your enclosure can be very beneficial to this tropical species.
This is when your spider is showing signs of molting. They will thicken the webbing and remain in the hammock for most of the day. They may refuse to eat, but it is important they are plump beforehand as this helps with the molting process. Keep misting as usual, making sure to also get teeny droplets on the web they can drink from. The process takes longer the older they get, but the actual shed only takes minutes.
