Adopting An Adult

Jumping spider for sale, pet jumping spider for sale, Phidippus Regius jumping spider

Adult Age & Gender

A Jumping spider becomes an adult when they fully mature. This is their last molt and their bodies and sex organs have fully developed. Males will have bulbous pedipalps and females will have an epigynum. Phidippus Regius usually mature around a year old. Adopting a mature spider is not usually ideal as this is the peak of their lifespan. We only adopt out HEALTHY, NON GRAVID MATURE JUMPING SPIDERS. Mature jumpers are usually quite curious and may often get comfy enough to take a nap while playing.

Diet

A healthy diet for a mature jumping spider can consist of mealworms, medium to large crickets, roaches, fly spikes, flies & waxworms. Make sure the abdomen is plump, not overstuffed or too skinny. This is a good way to tell how often to feed. Females usually are aggressive hunters into their old age. Males tend to shy away from larger prey and mainly drink water. Remember to mist daily, and your jumping spider, especially your adult males would benefit from drinking droplets of sugar water from a flat surface almost daily.

Proper Enclosure

Adults will do well in a 4x4x8 enclosure, or a bit larger. The enclosure should have proper ventilation and plenty of enrichment for your jumping spider. As your adult ages, they drop drag lines of webbing to make it like "home" and easy for them to get around. It's important to leave those there for them as they get older.

Lighting & Temperature

Our jumping spiders require a night/day cycle. You can provide this with natural indirect sunlight and LED lamps. They do not require a heat lamp. They are pretty comfy at room temperature,  72-80 degrees. If your home gets cooler you can provide heat by using a heat mat with a thermostat. Place it about a half inch away from one side of the enclosure. It's also important to note if you live in a dry climate, using substrate in your enclosure can be very beneficial to this tropical species.

As Your Adult Ages

Your jumping spider may lose the ability to produce silk or the confidence to jump as far as they once did. You can make adjustments to the enclosure by adding mesh to the sides of the walls and lots of extra soft things to climb on. They may also benefit from being hand fed and drinking directly from water droplets.
